Work by the Mediterranean for Under ₹31,000 — Malta’s Nomad Residence Permit Guide

Dreaming of trading your desk for sea breezes, colorful streets, and a slice of Mediterranean paradise? Malta, the sun-soaked archipelago in Southern Europe, now makes it possible — affordably. Its Nomad Residence Permit, a Digital Nomad Visa, allows non-EU remote workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs to live in Malta as they work for clients or companies abroad.

Who Qualifies for Malta’s Digital Nomad Permit?

If you meet the following criteria, you’re already a strong candidate:

  • Working remotely, as a freelancer, consultant, or business owner (for employers outside Malta)
  • Aged 18 or above
  • Have a minimum annual income of €42,000 (₹42.75 lakh) or €3,500/month (₹3.56 lakh)
  • Employed by a foreign employer or running a business outside Malta
  • Note: Clients or employers based in Malta are not eligible. This permit doesn’t offer a path to permanent residency or citizenship.

How to Apply — Step by Step

Step 1: Gather Your Documents

You’ll need the following:

  • A valid passport
  • Letter of intent explaining why you want to live in Malta
  • Proof of remote work (employment contract, client agreements, etc.)
  • Financial proof (bank statements or pay slips)
  • A rental or property agreement in Malta
  • A clean criminal record
  • Valid health insurance

Step 2: Apply Online

Submit your application through Malta’s official government portal for the Nomad Permit.

Step 3: Pay the Visa Fee

The application fee is €300 (~₹30,500).

Step 4: Approval & Final Documents

Once your application is approved in principle, you’ll need to send additional documents like final proof of accommodation and insurance coverage.

Step 5: Biometrics & Permit Card

After arriving in Malta, you’ll complete biometric registration. Then you’ll receive your Nomad Residence Card for an additional €27.50 (~₹2,800).

Stay Duration & Renewals

  • Initial permit duration: 1 year
  • Renewable up to 3 times, allowing a maximum stay of 4 years
  • Renewal requires proof of continued eligibility and income

What About Family Members?

Great news — you can bring your spouse and dependents along:

  • They must meet eligibility requirements
  • No additional income threshold required for them
  • Note: A valid Schengen or D visa is still required to enter Malta, as the Nomad Permit is not a travel visa on its own.

Why Malta Ranks as a Top Remote Work Destination

  • Stunning Mediterranean lifestyle with warm weather and vibrant culture
  • Far more budget-friendly than many Western European countries
  • Thriving remote worker community
  • Modern infrastructure, English widely spoken, and welcoming locals
