10 Major Visa Updates for Indian Travellers in 2025

If you’re planning to work, study, or travel abroad this year, there’s good news—2025 has brought a wave of friendlier visa policies for Indian passport holders. From new digital nomad visas in Europe and Asia, to visa-free entry in island nations, and even faster processing in popular destinations like South Africa, the global travel landscape is opening wider for Indians.

That said, not every update is positive. The United States has announced a new $250 visa integrity fee and stricter passport collection rules, which could make the process more expensive and time-consuming for Indian applicants.

To help you navigate, here’s a complete breakdown of the 12 biggest visa updates for Indians in 2025, explained in simple terms.

1. New Zealand Visitor Visa Now Allows Remote Work

Since January 27, 2025, New Zealand has introduced a game-changing update: remote work is now officially allowed under the Visitor Visa.

This means Indian employees working for foreign companies—or self-employed professionals with overseas clients—can legally live and work in New Zealand for up to 90 days. Unlike many other “digital nomad visas,” New Zealand’s version has no minimum income requirement.

  • Stay duration: Up to 90 days
  • Visa fee: NZD $341 (~₹16,689)
  • Processing time: 20–25 days
  • Extra fee: International Visitor Conservation & Tourism Levy (NZD $100, ~₹8,665)

Do note that this is not a substitute for a full-fledged work visa. If you want to work for a New Zealand-based employer, you’ll still need a standard Work Visa.

For digital nomads, however, it’s a golden opportunity to experience the country’s stunning landscapes while working remotely.

2. South Africa Approves 3-Day Visa for Indians

South Africa is taking big steps to attract more Indian tourists. On February 12, 2025, the country launched the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS).

This initiative lets approved tour operators directly process group visa applications on behalf of Indian travellers, cutting out the tedious paperwork. The best part? Visas will now be issued digitally within 3 days.

  • No embassy visits required
  • 65 operators already approved across India, South Africa, and China
  • Streamlined digital approvals

Given that India currently makes up only 3.9% of South Africa’s foreign visitors, this move could significantly boost tourism—and make South Africa a hot new destination for Indian travellers.

3. Palau Goes Visa-Free for Indians

If you’re looking for an offbeat island escape, here’s your chance. The Republic of Palau has officially added India to its visa-free entry list.

Indian travellers can now visit Palau for 30 days without a visa.

Palau, located in the Western Pacific Ocean, is known for its pristine coral reefs, diving spots, and volcanic islands. While there are no direct flights from India yet, connections via Manila, Singapore, Seoul, or Taipei make it accessible.

This move follows a similar decision by the Philippines, signalling that Micronesian islands are opening their doors wider to Indian travellers.

4. Philippines Introduces Digital Nomad Visa

In April 2025, President Marcos signed an executive order creating a Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) for remote workers.

This visa allows Indians to:

  • Live and work in the Philippines for up to one year
  • Extend for another year
  • Enjoy island life while working remotely

Visa fees:

  • 3 months (single entry): USD $65 (~₹5,503)
  • 6 months (multiple entry): USD $105 (~₹8,890)
  • 1 year (multiple entry): USD $145 (~₹12,275)

Required documents include proof of remote work, sufficient income, no criminal record, and valid health insurance.

This makes the Philippines a strong contender for digital nomads seeking affordable, tropical, and vibrant locations.

5. Slovenia to Launch Digital Nomad Visa in November

Europe is calling! Starting November 21, 2025, Slovenia will join the growing list of European countries offering a digital nomad visa.

Key features:

  • Stay for up to 1 year (non-renewable)
  • Must work for a foreign-based company
  • Family members can join but cannot work in Slovenia
  • Automatic access to Schengen travel (29 countries)

Applications can be filed online or through Slovenian embassies. This makes Slovenia, with its Alpine scenery, lakes, and historic towns, an attractive base for Indian remote workers.

6. US Introduces a $250 Visa Integrity Fee

A major update for Indians applying to the US: starting October 1, 2025, the US will impose a new $250 “visa integrity fee”.

This fee applies to multiple categories, including:

  • Student visas (F-1, F-2, J-1, J-2)
  • Work visas (H1-B, H-4)
  • Visitor visas (B1, B2)

For Indians, this could push the total cost of a US visa to around ₹36,000–₹40,000.

Although the US Department of Homeland Security may consider reimbursements for applicants who strictly comply with visa terms, the upfront cost is unavoidable.

7. US Student Visa Applicants Face Social Media Vetting

As of June 23, 2025, Indian students applying for F, M, and J visas must:

  • Make their social media accounts public
  • Disclose all usernames used in the past 5 years

Consular officers will screen posts, likes, and affiliations for potential red flags. Content supporting extremism, hostility, or even inflammatory political views could complicate approvals.

Applicants are strongly advised not to delete old accounts or posts suddenly, as that may appear suspicious.

8. US Embassy in India Bans Third-Party Passport Collection

Starting August 2025, Indian applicants for US visas must personally collect their passports.

  • Third-party collection (by agents, friends, or relatives) is no longer permitted
  • For minors, parents must present original consent letters signed by both parents
  • A paid delivery option is available for ₹1,200

This change aims to strengthen passport security for applicants.

9. Stricter US Visa Interview Waivers

From September 2, 2025, the US will narrow eligibility for interview waivers.

Only certain renewals of B1/B2 tourist visas may qualify. Even then, consular officers can still request in-person interviews on a case-by-case basis.

This marks a return to pre-pandemic procedures and could lengthen processing times for Indian travellers.

10. Switzerland Opens Golden Visa for Indians

For wealthy Indian families and entrepreneurs, Switzerland’s Golden Visa program is now open.

Options include:

  • Paying an annual lump-sum tax (from CHF 200,000 / ~₹2.18 crore)
  • Investing at least CHF 1 million (~₹10.9 crore) in a Swiss company

This visa provides:

  • Swiss residency rights
  • Free movement across the Schengen zone
  • Path to permanent residency in 10 years and citizenship in 12

Final Thoughts

2025 has truly reshaped the global visa landscape for Indian passport holders. From visa-free entry to exotic islands like Palau and the Philippines, to digital nomad visas in Europe and Asia, Indians now have more opportunities than ever to work, travel, and live abroad.

However, applicants should also prepare for stricter regulations from the US, including higher costs and more security checks.

Whether you’re a digital nomad, student, tourist, or entrepreneur, staying updated on these visa changes for Indians in 2025 can help you plan smarter and avoid unexpected hurdles.
