Failing any one of them could prevent someone from receiving the benefit—even if their condition affects their daily life.

How much is Attendance Allowance worth?

Attendance Allowance is paid at two weekly rates during the 2026–27 benefit year:

Rate

Weekly payment

Typical four-week payment

Annual value

Lower

£76.70

£306.80

£3,988.40

Higher

£114.60

£458.40

£5,959.20

The lower rate is generally for someone needing frequent help or supervision during the day, or supervision at night.

The higher rate applies when help or supervision is required during both the day and night. It can also apply under special rules when a medical professional says someone is nearing the end of life. Current Attendance Allowance rates

Importantly, £458.40 is a four-week payment, not a calendar-month payment. Claimants normally receive 13 four-week payments over a full year.

The eight reasons DWP could reject a claim

According to the official eligibility rules, you may not qualify if:

1. You do not have a qualifying condition

Applicants must have a physical disability, sensory disability, mental disability, learning difficulty or health condition.

A diagnosis can support a claim, but the DWP primarily considers how the condition affects the person’s need for care or supervision.

2. Your condition does not create sufficient care needs

Having an illness or disability is not enough by itself.

Your condition must be severe enough that you reasonably need help looking after yourself or supervision to protect your own safety—or someone else’s.

This can include difficulties with washing, dressing, eating, taking medication, using the toilet or remaining safe when no one is present.

You do not need to be receiving that help. It is the help you reasonably require that matters.

3. You have needed help for fewer than six months

Under the normal rules, the care or supervision needs must have existed for at least six months.

Different rules apply to people nearing the end of life. Eligible applicants using the special rules may receive a faster decision and the higher payment rate without completing the standard six-month qualifying period.

4. You are not in Great Britain when you claim

Claimants normally need to be physically present in Great Britain when submitting an application.

There are exceptions, including certain members of the Armed Forces and their families. Some people living in the European Economic Area or Switzerland may also qualify under separate coordination rules.

5. You have not lived in Great Britain for two of the previous three years

Applicants generally must have been present in Great Britain for at least two of the last three years.

This condition does not apply in the same way to everyone. Refugees and people with humanitarian protection, for example, may be exempt from this requirement.

6. You are not habitually resident

You must normally be habitually resident in the UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.

This test considers where your normal home is and whether you have established a genuine connection with the relevant area.

7. You are subject to immigration control

People subject to immigration control may not qualify, although an exception can apply to certain sponsored immigrants.

Because immigration and residence rules can be complicated, applicants affected by this condition should consider obtaining specialist benefits advice.

8. You already receive another overlapping disability benefit

You cannot normally receive Attendance Allowance if you already get:

Disability Living Allowance

Personal Independence Payment

Adult Disability Payment

Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance

Armed Forces Independence Payment

Someone who continues receiving PIP or DLA after reaching State Pension age would not normally switch to Attendance Allowance simply because of their age.

The complete list, including residence exceptions, is available in the official DWP eligibility guidance.

Savings and income will not disqualify you

Attendance Allowance is not means-tested.

Your wages, pension income and savings do not determine the payment, and you do not need to have paid a particular amount of National Insurance contributions.

You also do not need to employ a carer or have a relative already looking after you. The decision is based on the help or supervision you require because of your condition.

The benefit does not include a separate mobility component.

The care-home rule applicants should know

Attendance Allowance usually cannot be paid when someone lives in a care home and their care is funded by a local authority.

A resident paying the entire cost of their care home placement may still be able to claim. Hospital, hospice and care-home stays should therefore be explained carefully on the application.

A successful claim could unlock additional support

Receiving Attendance Allowance may increase entitlement to other help, including:

Pension Credit

Housing Benefit

Council Tax Reduction

The effect depends on the claimant’s household circumstances and existing benefits, so a successful award could be worth more than the Attendance Allowance payment alone.

How to make a claim

People in England and Wales can apply online or by post. Applicants will need their National Insurance number, contact information, details of their condition and information for their GP or medical centre.

If you request a paper form by telephone and return it within six weeks, the claim can normally begin from the date of the call. Otherwise, a postal claim generally begins when the DWP receives the form. Official application instructions

People living in Scotland should apply for Pension Age Disability Payment instead. Northern Ireland also has a separate application process.

Do not assume that having savings, living alone or not employing a carer will prevent you from claiming.

The most important part of an Attendance Allowance application is explaining the help or supervision you reasonably need—not simply listing medical diagnoses.

But before applying, check the eight rules carefully. One overlooked eligibility condition could stand between you and support worth almost £6,000 a year.

Pensioners with long-term health conditions could receive up to £458.40 every four weeks—but these eight eligibility rules may stop a claim in its tracks.
