The Department for Work and Pensions is expected to send payments automatically in November or December 2026.

However, age, living arrangements and annual income will all affect what happens to the money. Some pensioners may receive the payment only for HMRC to reclaim it later.

Here is what you need to know before winter arrives.

Who could receive the Winter Fuel Payment?

You may qualify for the 2026–27 Winter Fuel Payment if you:

Were born on or before 27 June 1960

Usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland

Meet the remaining residence and eligibility conditions

Eligible pensioners should receive a letter in October or November confirming how much they will get. Most payments will then arrive automatically in November or December. Official GOV.UK guidance confirms that payments will range from £100 to £300.

Scotland operates a separate benefit called the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment.

How do you get the full £300?

The amount is based on your age and household circumstances during the qualifying week of 21 to 27 September 2026.

Someone living alone—or living with nobody else who qualifies—will generally receive:

£200 if born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960

£300 if born before 28 September 1946

Payments may be divided when two eligible pensioners live together. Couples jointly receiving certain means-tested benefits may instead receive one household payment of £200 or £300.

People living in care homes generally receive £100 or £150 if eligible, although additional restrictions can apply. The complete payment table is available on the GOV.UK Winter Fuel Payment page.

The £35,000 rule that could catch people out

The payment may arrive automatically, but that does not necessarily mean you are allowed to keep it.

If your individual total income is £35,000 or less, you can normally retain the payment. If it is more than £35,000, HMRC will generally recover the entire amount—not just the portion of your income above the threshold.

Your partner’s income does not count towards your personal £35,000 limit. Income considered by HMRC can include:

State, workplace and private pensions

Employment or self-employment income

Savings interest and dividends

Rental profits

Taxable state benefits

HMRC will usually recover the money through a change to your PAYE tax code or through Self Assessment. There is no gradual reduction: crossing the threshold can result in the full payment being reclaimed. HMRC explains the recovery rules here.

People receiving certain qualifying benefits during the relevant week—including Pension Credit, Universal Credit and some income-related benefits—may be exempt from the recovery charge.

You can still opt out—but don’t miss this deadline

Pensioners who expect to earn more than £35,000 can opt out rather than receiving money that HMRC will later reclaim.

For the 2026 payment, the online opt-out deadline is 11:59pm on 20 September 2026. The telephone deadline is 6pm on 18 September 2026. Opting out will not affect your State Pension. The official opt-out instructions are available on GOV.UK.

Who will not qualify?

You will generally be excluded if you:

Usually live outside England, Wales or Northern Ireland

Were in prison throughout the qualifying week

Have immigration conditions preventing access to public funds

Were receiving free hospital treatment throughout the qualifying week and the preceding year

Special exclusions can also apply to care-home residents receiving Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance.

Up to £300 could arrive automatically before Christmas—but eligibility does not always mean the money is yours to keep.

Check your birth date, household circumstances and expected annual income now. A few minutes spent reviewing the rules could prevent an unexpected HMRC tax-code adjustment later.

The Winter Fuel Payment is returning for 2026, but one income rule could determine whether you keep the money or HMRC takes it back.
